My Single Self

She's been my constant companion for the last thirty-five years. She's made me self-reliant. She's made me self-confident. She's been my best friend and my worst enemy. There were times when I struggled against her. When I wanted anything but her, and yet, she persisted. We've overcome our odds, and in recent years, we've been happy together. Now, I am preparing to bid her adieu.

There have been some serious growing pains. So much so that I've nearly chosen her (my past) over my future. It's amazing the clarity that comes when you're standing at the brink, preparing to jump off. I know what I want. I know what will complete me. I have no doubt about that. The problem is knowing these things doesn't make change any easier.

Tears will be shed. Voices will be raised. Doors may even be slammed. But keep in mind, as I transition towards my future and struggle as I move away from my past, it is you, my future, that I choose. And so, I will put my single self neatly away on a shelf and kiss her goodbye. Au revoir, ma belle soeur. Je t'aime toujours.
