When is enough, enough?

In the heat of argument, when emotions are high, at what point do you lose sight of what you're fighting for and which arguments you're willing to lose? And when the argument is recurring, how quickly do you lose sight of the big picture only to focus on winning the battle at hand?

I am struggling to answer these questions. When there's an aversion to conflict, the desire for peace and harmony prevails at almost any cost. The need for a return to some semblance of normalcy triumphs the need to compromise. If compromise is the key that unlocks the future, the dreams that you don't dare to dream for fear they may never come true, why would I be unwilling to bend? Especially if bending leads to dreams becoming reality...

Thirty-five

My birthday this year was a monumental one. Thirty-five. It has a certain sense of gloom and doom about it. Like I've officially hit mid-life. Not quite in the forty sense of mid-life, but in the you're so far removed from your twenties, you can't possibly relate any longer mid-life. Charming. I've had almost a month to get used to the idea, and mostly I'm in denial. But when it comes down to it, I almost want to declare this year my un-birthday. Like it never really happened. I'll redo it and embrace thirty-five next year.

A sea of disappointment surrounded this year. As Stevie Wonder so aptly put it, it felt like just another ordinary day. There was nothing spectacular, nothing remarkable about it. And when the day came to end, and I was alone with my thoughts, I had this bizarre aha, deja vu kind of moment. I had this does life imitate art or does art imitate life thought as I was reminded of a certain SATC episode where Carrie miserably celebrates her 35th. After a series of mishaps, she leaves her party feeling all alone. It's amazing how that sentiment rang true with me. It's not like I sought it out or was obsessed with the idea beforehand. In fact, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I can still be impacted by a show that was so five years ago. I'm beyond that. But it's true. And what's amazing is as her girlfriends rescued her at the end of the episode, I'm glad I have fantastic girlfriends that can lift my spirits and rescued me out of my wallow, salvaging what was left of this year's un-birthday.
